Report: Civil War History Set To Heavy Metal

Christina Kauffman of York Sunday News reports that for those who like to serve their Civil War history with a dose of heavy metal music, Indiana-based ICED EARTH has released "The Glorious Burden", a 12-track compact disc that highlights historic moments using an electric guitar.

A self-proclaimed history buff from an early age, ICED EARTH mainman Jon Schaffer said that he expects people to criticize the album's unconventional nature, "but I think people who are intellectually honest will look at it and think it's OK because the goal is to get people interested in history."

"I'm always looking for music that's relevant to (students)," said Marta Robertson, a musicologist and associate professor of music at Gettysburg College. "You definitely do think of the more military type of marching music (in relation to Gettysburg.) I guess it shows the universality of the story, that people can set it to all different kinds of music. The event inspired a lot of music across time." Read more.
